The lion in the name has three explanations. The soundest brings it from Trebula Mutuesca, the Sabine town that lies beside and beneath the village: many stone lions came out of its ruins. The second calls in the Brancaleoni, lords from 1344; the third, which the entry itself calls unproven, sees in the hill the back of a lion lying in wait.

The coat of arms, a gold lion on red holding a three-peaked mount between its paws, has always been used without any decree ever granting it. For Saint Victoria, on the second Sunday of May, the relics and the statue come out; a smaller statuette moves each year from one house to another among the families of the deputazione, and aniseed ring cakes are thrown down from the balconies.
