Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Castel San Pietro Romano, a municipality of 855 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Rome, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
The fortress was built in 970 by Stefania of the counts of Tusculum, sister of pope John XIII, and inside it stood a round tower that served as a prison: through it passed Jacopone da Todi, who composed the Stabat Mater here, and in 1268 Conradin of Swabia, before being taken to Naples and beheaded.
In 1953 Luigi Comencini shot Pane, amore e fantasia here, and in the film the village is called Sagliena; then came the sequels and a dozen other pictures, so that the square is still recognisable. Gina Lollobrigida, who acted in that film, was made an honorary citizen in 2018, the village's first.
