In 1606 Caravaggio, on the run from Rome, stopped here: the Colonna gave him shelter in their palace and he, in return, painted. Fifteen years earlier, in those same rooms, eight cardinals — Robert Bellarmine among them — had met to revise the text of the Bible before it went to press.
The town stands entirely on a tufa ridge two kilometres long and a hundred metres wide, with a street plan drawn in the sixteenth century. The people of Zagarolo claim descent from ancient Gabii, and have put S.P.Q.G. on the coat of arms: Senatus PopulusQue Gabiorum. The composer Goffredo Petrassi was born here; there are 16,922 residents.
