Cave

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 10,421 · Postal code: 00033

Cave has 10,421 inhabitants at the foot of the Prenestini mountains, among chestnut woods. The name states the trade: in the tenth century, a mile from the old Castrum Trebanum, the pozzolana and tuff quarries were opened and a community grew around them, the Cavarum Terra from which Cave comes. The old castle was abandoned a few centuries later and left in ruins; in 1117 pope Paschal II had stopped there on his way from Anagni to Palestrina to consecrate the cathedral.

A fief of the Colonna, Cave was swept up in the war between Charles V and Francis I: in December 1526 the army of Clement VII, who sided with the French, razed fourteen Colonna fiefs in Lazio, and Cave was among them. Thirty years later, in the War of Salt, the town was spared instead, and it was here that the final negotiations were held: the peace between the Papal State and Spain was signed at Cave in September 1557. Every year, in September, the treaty is re-enacted with a procession and a palio.
