Torrita Tiberina

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,071 · Postal code: 00060

The name comes from the towers: Turritula, «the little towers», appears as early as 747, in the donation by which Carloman gave these lands to the Benedictines of Sant'Andrea in Flumine. They were signal towers; in the twelfth century the Savelli turned them into a fortress with walls, moat and drawbridge, and the lower part of that palace belongs to the comune today.

In the village cemetery Aldo Moro lies buried; he was fond of Torrita and used to come and stay here. The church of San Tommaso Apostolo was the castle chapel and holds canvases attributed to Pinturicchio and to Carlo Maratta. The village sits inside a bend of the Tiber, in the Nazzano reserve; and in 1902, while the bridge at Montorso was being built, there was unrest among the workmen.
