Ponzano Romano

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 1,158 · Postal code: 00060

Here the Tiber turns in bends so wide that one of them draws a flask, and the name has stuck. The village sits on a river terrace, and one piece of its territory is stranded on the floodplain, ringed by three other comuni. On the river there was a landing, still called Barca di Ponzano today: the abbey of Sant'Andrea in Flumine controlled it.

The Benedictines stayed here for a millennium, from the sixth century to 1546, when a bull of Paul III detached these lands and gave them to the abbey of Tre Fontane, held by cardinal Alessandro Farnese. In 1525 a plague brought by a detachment of soldiers even stopped the administration of justice: the village put itself under Saint Sebastian, and has carried him in procession on the first Sunday of June ever since.
