Poggio Mirteto

Province: Rieti · Region: Lazio · Population: 5,995 · Postal code: 02047

Poggio Mirteto has 5,995 inhabitants on a river terrace in the Tiber valley. The town was born in the first half of the thirteenth century, when the inhabitants of several nearby castles decided to join together to defend themselves better; in 1837 pope Gregory XVI gave it the title of city. On a house in the old centre a plaque records that Anita Garibaldi, already gravely ill, was taken in and cared for here during her husband's retreat from Rome in 1849.

February 1861 is the date the town still celebrates. Poggio Mirteto was under the pope, and it rose: a delegation of the workers from the local glassworks went all the way to Rieti to ask for annexation to the nascent Kingdom of Italy. Among the things the townspeople asked for was that this liberation be celebrated every year, and that is how the Carnevale Liberato was born, which has kept its anticlerical spirit to this day. In the Second World War the railway station was the scene of one of the most spectacular partisan actions in the area: on 19 September 1943 two German goods trains were blown up and, standing beside them, Mussolini's private train.
