Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Arlena di Castro, a municipality of 886 inhabitants in the province of Viterbo, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
By the middle of the fifteen hundreds the village was almost empty, reduced to a roccaccia. It was made again by cardinal Alessandro Farnese the Younger: in 1573 he brought in some families from Allerona, near Orvieto, and to persuade them he gave them land and exemption from taxes. Until 1649 Arlena followed the fortunes of the Duchy of Castro.
On the sixth of February 1971 the Tuscania earthquake had its epicentre halfway between Tuscania and Arlena. Parliament answered with a law that released from military service the young men of the two villages who volunteered to rebuild them. The necropolis of Ararella, meanwhile, had for years been the town rubbish dump.
