Saint Andrew the Apostle, patron of Vulci
📅 Every year, on 30 November
Canino celebrates Saint Andrew the Apostle on 30 November.
Canino has 5,270 inhabitants in the Maremma of Lazio, with the ancient Etruscan city of Vulci partly inside its own territory. Two men who weighed on European history are attached to this village. The first was born here on 28 February 1468: Alessandro Farnese, who would become Pope Paul III. The second arrived much later and stayed: Lucien Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother and prince of Canino and Musignano, who lived here and is buried with his family in the collegiate church.
Vignola, the architect who built the Farnese their villa at Caprarola, also designed the Farnese fountain of this village, which has a twelve-sided plan. Down towards the Fiora, instead, stands the castello dell'Abbadia, raised right against a Roman bridge that they call here the rainbow bridge, thrown across the gorge in which the river runs; and that same river now divides Canino from Montalto di Castro. The village is known for two things that grow in its fields: the canina olive, whose oil carries a protected designation, and the green asparagus, sweeter and less fibrous than most, so much so that it can be eaten raw.
