Feast of Sant'Egidio
📅 Every year, on 1 September
On 1 September Cellere, a municipality of 1,230 inhabitants in the province of Viterbo, celebrates its patron Sant'Egidio.
On the coat of arms of Cellere there is a doe: it is the doe of Saint Giles the abbot, the patron, who according to legend lived as a hermit in a wood near Arles and fed on the milk of a doe that kept him company. The church dedicated to the saint does not stand in the village but down in a valley, a short way off, and is the work of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.
The place belonged to the Farnese and ended up in the duchy of Castro, whose fortunes it followed until the duchy was wiped out in 1649; of Farnese rule there remains the castle that looms over the houses. Back with the Church, Cellere stayed there until the Risorgimento, and the entry recalls two of its citizens among the patriots of unification, Tommaso and Francesco Mazzariggi.
