Feast of Saint Matthew
📅 Every year, on 21 September
On 21 September Fabrica di Roma celebrates Saint Matthew; the municipal territory includes the archaeological area of Falerii Novi, the ancient Roman city.
Fabrica di Roma has 8,136 inhabitants below the Cimini mountains, on ground that is almost all volcanic rock. In its territory, halfway towards Civita Castellana, are the walls of Falerii Novi, a Roman town: the whole circuit of the walls is still there, and inside them stands a church, Santa Maria in Falerii, while not far off the catacombs of San Gratiliano and Santa Felicissima open into the tufa.
The name appears in 1093, when a certain Ildebrando handed over the fundus Fabricae to the abbey of Farfa; for centuries the village belonged to the Hospital of Santo Spirito in Saxia, which took it back every time somebody tried to keep it. In 1539 it was sold to Pier Luigi Farnese and entered the Duchy of Castro. The "di Roma", on the other hand, is recent: it was added in 1873, and for a while the village was officially called Fabrica di Roma, province of Rome, district of Viterbo.
