Feast of Saint Clement
📅 Every year, on 23 November
On 23 November Latera celebrates its patron Saint Clement, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Up on the ridge, along the Castrense road, stands the hamlet of Cantoniera: the houses are a few metres from one another, but the ones to the west belong to Latera and the ones to the east to Gradoli, some ten kilometres away. The village itself is coiled like a snail on the rim of a volcanic caldera that is still hot underground.
The little church of the Madonna della Cava was bombed in the war and reduced to a ruin: the only thing saved was the picture hanging behind the altar. On the left wall a black mark has remained, which the old people call i' diavelo de la Madonna de la Cava: the story goes of a girl who swore to marry the first man she met, and of the bridegroom who dissolved into a cloud on the threshold.
