Saint Nicholas, patron of Sorano
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Sorano celebrates Saint Nicholas on 6 December, in the collegiate church dedicated to him.
The town stands on a spur of tuff above the Lente, and that made it hard to take: the Sienese laid siege to the fortress several times through the fifteenth century and only succeeded in 1417. In 1552 Niccolò IV Orsini rebuilt it from scratch, with two corner bastions and a curtain wall between them.
The arms show a castle of seven golden towers on silver. The seven are probably a misreading: on the older shield there were three towers with four Guelph merlons between them, which somebody counted as towers too. And the golden cross above took the place of the red rose of the Orsini, the lords of the place.
