Feast of Saint Tryphon
📅 Every year, on 10 November
On 10 November Onano celebrates its patron Saint Tryphon; the town is also home to the Castello di Santa Cristina.
Onano reads the same both ways: it is one of the five Italian comuni with a palindromic name. The name may come from an Aulus or Aunus, the first owner of the estate; the Casale Aulanum appears in 823, when a Lombard noble gave it to the abbey on Monte Amiata. The lentils, the thing the village is known for, are already in the community's statute as reformed in the sixteenth century.
The Monaldeschi castle everyone here calls Palazzo Madama, from the French title given to Carlotta Denham Bousquet, who held it in emphyteusis. Garibaldi slept there, and there the young Eugenio Pacelli, the future Pius XII, spent his summers, his grandfather having left Onano for Rome. And Saint Columba, the village's patron, still wears the dress the singer Lina Cavalieri gave her.
