The patron saint of Orte is Saint Giles the Abbot, celebrated on 1 September.
It is a feast of ancient tradition and a historical commemoration, solemnised by Pope Boniface IX in 1396 with the granting of the same indulgences as the Porziuncola of Assisi. Even today the procession held on the evening of 31 August, the eve of the feast, draws great participation: in the past all the city's magistracies and the sixteen craft guilds took part. On Good Friday, moreover, the Procession of the Dead Christ is held, among the oldest of its kind in Italy, probably dating back to the early 13th century. The town also holds the Porta di San Cesareo and the Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta.
