Penna in Teverina

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,056 · Postal code: 05028

At the entrance to a villa that belonged to the Orsini stand the Mammalocchi: two travertine columns with allegorical figures, and that is what the village has always called them.

On 7 December 1502 Gian Corrado Orsini, lord of Bomarzo, bought the castle of Penna from the Colonna for three thousand six hundred ducats; his son Maerbale made it his residence and laid out palace and gardens, with the Fonte Orsina as the showpiece. The town's name comes from the Latin pinna, the peak: it sits on top of a terrace above the Tiber. It is the smallest comune in Umbria by area, and its 1,056 residents live by farming.
