Giove

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,900 · Postal code: 05024

The name comes from a temple of Jupiter that must have stood here. The town first appears in a document of 1191, under the name Juvo, and the castle that dominates it dates from that same year.

Amelia, Todi and Orvieto all fought over it; it passed to the Anguillara, then to the Farnese, and in 1597 Matteo Farnese sold it to the brothers Ciriaco and Asdrubale Mattei. With the Mattei came the marquisate and, in 1643, the ducal title Urban VIII granted to Girolamo. The church of Santa Maria Assunta was built at their wish, in the eighteenth century. The 1,900 residents live on a plateau above the Tiber, inside the medieval walls.
