Feast of Saint Victor
📅 Every year, on 14 May
On 14 May Otricoli celebrates Saint Victor; in summer, instead, the town goes back to AD 168 with the Ocriculum re-enactment.
At the end of the eighteenth century, digging the Roman town on the bank of the Tiber, a colossal head came to light: it is the Jupiter of Otricoli, now in the Vatican Museums.
Ocriculum stood on the Via Flaminia, where the road crossed the river: in 308 BC it broke away from the other Umbrian cities to ally with Rome, and inscriptions call it splendidissima civitas Ocricolana. Cicero had a villa here. In the Middle Ages people moved higher up, where the town still stands: the 1,915 residents look down on the river from the terrace. At San Vittore grows a moraiolo olive tree that carbon 14 has dated: it is about 680 years old.
