Castelnuovo Magra

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 8,269 · Postal code: 19033

Castelnuovo was born out of a war. At the end of the twelfth century the bishop of Luni, Gualtiero II, was at odds with the Malaspina marquises, and decided to plant between Fosdinovo and Carrara a garrison that would hold the roads of the fief, starting with the via Francigena.

The name of the town appears for the first time in a deed of 1203. Before it there had been the castrum de monte Leonis, mentioned in a document of 4 March 1096, and before that the countryside of Luni: the western edge of the Roman city's necropolis runs through here, and in the Colline del Sole the remains of an imperial farm villa have come to light. There are 8,269 residents.
