Ameglia

Province: La Spezia · Region: Liguria · Population: 4,484 · Postal code: 19031

In 963 a diploma of Otto I gives the castrum de Ameliae as a fief to Adalberto, bishop of Luni, and that is the first time the town appears in a document. From the eleventh century the bishops made it their residence, and to sleep soundly they strengthened its walls.

Long before there was a necropolis of the fourth century BC, and the objects that came out of it speak of a place of traffic, towards the sea and towards the passes; at Bocca di Magra the remains of a Roman maritime villa survive. In 1252 the fief went to Nicolò Fieschi, and from 1284 it returned to the bishops. There are 4,484 residents.
