Albenga

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 23,576 · Postal code: 17031

Albenga's early-Christian baptistery has stood since the fifth century, ten-sided outside and octagonal within, its dome bearing a Byzantine mosaic: Liguria's oldest intact monument, worth the stop on its own. Around it, the medieval centre of towers — a dozen still rise — tells of Roman Albingaunum become an episcopal city.

The plain is Liguria's vegetable garden: here grow the rare violet asparagus and the celebrated "four of Albenga", including the thorny artichoke and the oxheart tomato. Offshore, Gallinara island closes a horizon that tastes of the true Riviera.
