Feast of Saint Matthew
📅 Every year, on 21 September
On 21 September Borghetto Santo Spirito celebrates Saint Matthew; the town's main church bears the same title.
The «Santo Spirito» of the name comes from a hospice. On 11 March 1154 the Hospitaller friars of Rome founded at Capo d'Anzio a church with a shelter attached, dedicated to the Holy Spirit; between the twelfth and the thirteenth century the building passed to the monks of San Pietro in Varatella.
Before them came the Romans: on the via Julia Augusta, towards Loano, a bridge survives that they call here the «pontasso», and in January 1871, digging for a villa at Capo d'Anzio, a grey stone altar came to light. A deed of 1254 records the sale of a piece of land for 20 Genoese lire. There are 5,154 residents.
