Pesto alla Genovese basil, garlic, pine nuts, pecorino and oil pounded in a mortar
Basil, garlic, pine nuts, pecorino and oil, pounded in a marble mortar: the sauce that has had a written recipe since 1863, born in Genoa.
Read more →Savona has an unusually crowded set of neighbours for such a thin province. To the north it meets three Piedmontese provinces, Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria; Imperia lies west, Genoa east, and the Ligurian Sea closes it off to the south. The result is a narrow band of coast that climbs within a few kilometres into the valleys leading inland, and whose 69 municipalities range from seaside resorts to villages of a few hundred people.
Most visitors stay on the water, with reason: Alassio, Finale Ligure, Varazze near the Genoese border, and Albenga, the second largest town in the province after Savona itself. The provincial capital gets skipped too often. It is a working port full of offices, but the old centre holds up. Head inland towards Cairo Montenotte and a different Liguria begins, one with no sea view and far fewer people looking at it.
