Antegnate

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,107 · Postal code: 24051

The inhabitants of Antegnate protested against the Austrians by giving up the lottery. It was a precise boycott: the proceeds of the game ended up in the imperial coffers, and the village decided not to pay another lira into them. The answer came with the army: the village was besieged and the population forced to pay a heavy penalty as partial compensation for the lost takings. Discontent, naturally, grew, and in the following years Antegnate gave volunteers to the risings of the area, among them Angelo Cattaneo.

The village, which today is in the province of Bergamo, was not so for centuries: it belonged to the county and the diocese of Cremona, and the present tie is the fruit of the border reform willed by Napoleon. The first document naming it is of 950 and speaks of a castrum; the name comes from the Latin gentile Antiniano, that is of the gens Antiniana. Of the church of San Michele some documents would date the building to the ninth century, and the bell tower, detached from the body of the church, is of the thirteenth or fourteenth; inside are works by Romanino and Enea Salmeggia. Three thousand one hundred and seven inhabitants.
