Fara Olivana con Sola

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,268 · Postal code: 24058

Fara is a Lombard word: it meant a group of families bound by kinship that moved together, and this one descended from a certain Olivano. The first document dates from the year 915. The village was destroyed in the wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and with it the church of San Lorenzo at Sola, which in sixteenth-century pastoral visits still appears as ruins.

The people of Sola nevertheless went on having mass said there, among the fallen walls, until they could rebuild the church in the seventeenth century. Under Venice came the canals and the fosso bergamasco, which marked the boundary of the Republic; and here, the chronicles say, maize began to be grown among the first in Europe.
