In 1260 Buoso da Duera, lord of Soncino, rebuilt the castle of Covo, which had been razed after the battle of 1237, and gave it nine towers, reinforced walls and a deep moat. He made it his refuge after the betrayal attributed to him: letting through, for money, the army that was marching to fight Manfred of Sicily. Napoleone della Torre besieged him here on the fourth of June 1266, drained the ditches, brought down the southern tower and in 1267 forced him to surrender; Buoso slipped away towards Cremona. Dante put him in hell, among the traitors of the fatherland, in a lake of ice.

Four thousand and sixty-six inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, on the plain, on land entirely under cultivation and watered by irrigation ditches and springs. The name appears for the first time in 920, already written Covo, and the theories about its origin are many: the simplest derives it from the Latin ad cavum, by the ditch, perhaps the Fosso Bergamasco that still crosses the territory. Tradition prefers the sheaves of wheat instead, which is indeed what stands on the municipal arms.
