Roncobello

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 429 · Postal code: 24010

The village was called Ronco, and nothing more. The name comes from the Latin runcus, which means terraced ground, or from the dialect ronch, a hill with steep sides: two words that describe a place like this well, in the valley of the Valsecca torrent, a side valley of the upper Val Brembana. It took its adjective only in the nineteenth century, and it was given by Victor Emmanuel II, who passing through was enchanted by the loveliness of the place: since 1863 the comune has been called Roncobello. Before that the story is that of a remote spot, where people from the nearby Valsassina probably took refuge in the times of the invasions — some identical place names in the two valleys suggest it. The first documents are of 1258 and speak of the division of the lands made almost seventy years earlier by the bishop of Bergamo, who owned the whole area; an act of 1234, earlier still, names the hamlet of Bordogna, whose name is said to come from one Bordonus.

In the Middle Ages the village fell into the fief of the Visconti, and of that time one piece of news remains that says everything: the Visconti gave every person of their faction permission to kill a Guelph. No documents of fighting here have come down, apart from the fortifications that stand in the territory of Bordogna. In 1442 Roncobello entered the Republic of Venice, within the district of the Val Brembana beyond the Goggia, which had its capital at Valnegra and enjoyed tax relief and privileges. In the Napoleonic age, in 1810, Baresi and Bordogna were joined to it; they became autonomous again under the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia and were united for good in 1927. The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul is of the eighteenth century and is known for decorations so overflowing that they put everything else in the shade. And then there is the Bus del Castel: in length it is the largest cave of the Bergamo country and the second in all Lombardy.
