Brembate

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,293 · Postal code: 24041

A deed of 962 lists among the holdings of Berengar II and his wife lands called Brembati inferior: the first time the village appears in writing, and the same charter names the Ecclesia sancti Victoris. The church still stands, Romanesque, on the bank of the Brembo, with a cave beneath it; it counted for so much that in the sixteenth century the village called itself Brembate San Vittore.

In 1483 the Duke of Calabria, allied with the Duke of Milan, attacked the town and levelled it. The present name is recent: until 1928 Brembate di Sotto and Grignano were separate comuni. The arms hold a maize cob and ears of wheat for a cereal-growing countryside, three five-rayed stars for the war dead, and at the base two gold pillars of unequal height: the arches of the bridge over the Brembo.
