Trezzo sull'Adda

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 11,883 · Postal code: 20056

Until 1862 the town was called simply Trezzo. Its old core sits on a rock spur that forces the Adda into a bend, and the likeliest explanation traces the name to that position; its origin stays unknown. Up there stood one of the strongest castles in Lombardy, fought over by Frederick Barbarossa and Milan, destroyed and rebuilt more than once.

What survives is Bernabò Visconti's building of 1370, where he lived and where his nephew Gian Galeazzo later shut him up until his death. The castle bridge crossed the Adda in a single span of 72 metres, twenty-five above the water, on three levels so carts and people passed separately: before the industrial revolution no single arch in the world was longer. At the foot of the ruins the Taccani power station rose in the early twentieth century, in local stone, on the brief that it not clash with the castle remains; and in The Betrothed Manzoni imagines the clock heard in the silence was Trezzo's.
