Filago

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,176 · Postal code: 24040

For thirty years the municipality bore the name of the wrong village. Marne was the old settlement, cited in a document of 976 and defended by a castle at the confluence of the Brembo and the Dordo; Filago came later and grew as Marne lost importance. When in 1927 the two boroughs were unified, the body took the name of Marne but put the town hall at Filago, and only in 1957 did the municipality call itself Filago, reducing Marne to a hamlet.

Several explanations circulate about the new name, and the one the inhabitants favour derives it from Finis Lacum, the end of the lake: the village would stand at the far end of the ancient lake Gerundo, the one that by tradition covered the plain. The castle of Marne, destroyed in 1404 by the troops of Pandolfo Malatesta and rebuilt by the Avogadri, later became the country residence of Bartolomeo Colleoni: the crenellated towers, the drawbridge and the park are still there. Of the Ponte Corvo, on the old road between Bergamo and Milan, the central pier remains. Three thousand one hundred and seventy-six inhabitants.
