Calvenzano

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,061 · Postal code: 24040

On the coat of arms of Calvenzano there are two clasped hands. In heraldry that figure is called a faith, and here it is not an ornament: it stands for the fact that this is the village of the cooperatives. The Agricultural Cooperative was founded in 1887, the Rural Bank in 1902, the Dairy Cooperative in 1922, and around them some twenty other smaller societies. The lyre that accompanies them stands instead for the band, one of the oldest in the province of Bergamo. A municipality that chose to be represented by a handshake and an instrument, rather than by a tower or a saint.

Four thousand and sixty-one inhabitants on the south-western plain of the Bergamo province, in the Gera d'Adda. The name comes from the Roman family name Calventius, of the gens Calventia, and the first document naming the village is from 984. Of the castle built in the eleventh century only the tower survives, in good condition: the rest has been absorbed into a factory building, and people work on top of it. In the oratory of the Beata Vergine Assunta, which has a fourteenth-century bell tower, a cycle of seventeenth-century frescoes by Tomaso Pombioli is preserved, with its captions written in the Italian of the time.
