Caravaggio

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 15,882 · Postal code: 24043

Michelangelo Merisi forever bound the name of this Lombard town to the dramatic shadows of his masterpieces. While the legendary painter's parents originated here, he was not the only artistic export: Polidoro da Caravaggio, a gifted pupil of Raphael, also carried the community's name southward during the Renaissance.

Located 40 kilometers east of Milan, the modern municipality is home to 15,882 residents. Beyond its art history, it has served as a major pilgrimage destination since 1432. Following a reported Marian apparition that year, a large sanctuary was constructed, cementing its religious significance across the Bergamo plains.
