Capizzone

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,301 · Postal code: 24030

The bell tower of Capizzone stands apart from the church, and there is a reason: it was a twelfth-century watchtower, later absorbed into the parish church, which in one of the raids by the neighbours from Brembilla was destroyed. The church was rebuilt elsewhere, the tower stayed where it was. It is the main charge on the town's coat of arms.

The quarrel with Brembilla was not only a matter of Guelphs and Ghibellines: the two were fighting over the left bank of the Imagna, and it ended only when Carlo Borromeo stepped in and gave the disputed land back to Capizzone. The village used to be called Plebe: it took its name from one of its own hamlets, Ca' dei Pizzoni. On the arms, beside the tower, are apples and chestnuts.
