Ubiale Clanezzo

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,399 · Postal code: 24010

A comune with two centres and four names. In the Middle Ages the villages of Ubiale and Clanezzo were attached to nearby Brembilla and made themselves autonomous from it between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries under the name of Brembilla Vecchia, taking along with them also the portions of Strozza and Capizzone on the left bank of the Imagna torrent. At the end of the seventeen hundreds they lost their autonomy again — Clanezzo aggregated to Capizzone, Ubiale to Brembilla — but on this the sources quarrel: the data of Formaloni, in 1777, still count the two villages as a single autonomous administrative body. With the Cisalpine Republic the territory was reunited into one comune, Clenesso con Ubiale, and since then the boundaries have never moved: all that changed was the name, Clenesso under the Austrians, Clanezzo with the Kingdom of Italy, and finally Ubiale Clanezzo.

The castle of Clanezzo belonged to the Ghibelline family of the Dalmasano, and around it legends and an air of mystery had gathered, because of the inaccessibility of the place and the terrible fame of its owners. When the Republic of Venice took the Bergamo lands, it ordered the castle destroyed: the Dalmasano had opposed its arrival. The comune's coat of arms, granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 11 May 1972, still shows it — the castle pulled down in 1441 and rebuilt in the following centuries to defend the inhabitants — beside a chestnut tree, for the woods that here give chestnuts of excellent quality. The Serenissima also opened the via Priula, which crossed the whole valley and linked Bergamo to the Grisons: it ran along the opposite side, at Sedrina, and even so it was enough to improve the trade of the two villages. Crossing, after all, is the trade of this place: a Roman road joined Clanezzo to Lemine, today's Almenno, passing by Ubiale and striding over the Brembo on a bridge of which one pier remains, and the medieval bridge of Attone, built for the count of Lecco Attone di Guiberto, still carries you over the Imagna, with the customs house of Clanezzo right beside it.
