Cologno al Serio

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 10,596 · Postal code: 24055

The name of Cologno is traced to a Colonius who owned and lived on these lands, or else to colono, farmer, given the village's farming vocation; in 843 a deed mentions one Sthephanus de Colonias, the first time the place appears in writing. The arms go back to the age of the rural commune and echo the name: a silver column on red, topped by a golden antique crown.

The centre has kept its medieval layout, with the walls, the moat — about ten metres wide and originally far deeper than it looks — and four gateways facing the cardinal points, one of which now houses the town hall. Venice, which had ordered the walls to be fortified in earnest, kept a permanent guard of sixteen soldiers here; and when the townsmen asked to answer directly to Venice rather than to Bergamo, the Republic refused: Cologno was the only fortified place able to shield Bergamo from the south.
