Ghisalba

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,923 · Postal code: 24050

Ghisalba's origins date to the fifth century: Roman-era finds, including an altar to Jupiter, turned up in the plain crossed by the Via Francisca. The modern road still follows that route, and an old tale says the Franks restored it to carry Emperor Louis II's body from Brescia to Milan. In the Middle Ages the village was fought over by Guelphs and Ghibellines: a castle stood here, torn down twice in the fourteenth century by the Milanese.

The village takes its name from the old church of San Lorenzo Martire, called ecclesia alba, perhaps for the color of baptismal robes — Ghisalba had one of the few baptismal churches in the Bergamo area — or simply because its walls were whitewashed; enlarged in the eighteenth century by architect Luca Lucchini, it was demolished in the nineteenth and replaced by today's domed rotunda, designed by architect Luigi Cagnola. The coat of arms shows the Roman eagle with the letters S.P.Q.R. and the Via Francisca, recalling its ancient origins, while a staff, a crosier and a mitre recall the privileges of Ghisalba's provosts, who sat at the bishop's right in synod — rights restated by the Latin motto Diocesis prima dignitas.
