Saint George among the castles on the Oglio

Credaro celebrates Saint George on 23 April, in the church dedicated to him.
The via Francesca passed through here, and near the oratory of Santi Cosma e Damiano a milestone was found that is reckoned among the most important Roman inscriptions in the province of Bergamo. In the municipal arms is a caduceus, the winged staff with two snakes: it comes from a small votive altar dedicated to Mercury, protector of fields and flocks and guardian of boundaries and of travellers, kept today in the Cittadella museum at Bergamo. The name itself is Latin, Cretarium, and the village belonged to the pagus of Calepio.
Credaro then gave its own name to a building stone quarried here and found in the walls of half the province. There remain the castle of Trebecco, of the tenth century, built on a rocky knoll with its little streets inside the walls, and the Romanesque church of San Fermo e Rustico out among the fields, with a bell tower of three tiers of mullioned windows. In the parish church of San Giorgio a Nativity with saints Rocco and Sebastiano by Lorenzo Lotto has come back to light. Three thousand three hundred and thirty-six inhabitants in the Valcalepio.
