Castelli Calepio

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 9,612 · Postal code: 24060

The municipality was formed in 1927 from Tagliuno and Calepio with their hamlets, and the name lines up the two castles: the Marenzi counts' at Tagliuno and the counts of Calepio's, recorded with the village in a document of 911. The older name seems to come from the Greek kalón, fair or good, and èpion, read as land of good wine; the valley named after it now names the Valcalepio wine.

From the castle of Calepio, rebuilt in the fifteenth century, came Trussardo da Calepio, who in the war between Milan and Venice sided with the Republic and beat the Visconti troops: his house won the fief of the valley. A descendant, Ambrogio da Calepio, compiled in 1502 the first multilingual dictionary, called after him the calepino. The castle chapel holds the remains of Saint Celestine, given by Pope Clement X to Count Giovanni Paolo Calepio; at Tagliuno the town hall sits in the villa of the singer Ignazio Marini, whom Verdi wanted in many of his operas.
