Villongo

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,619 · Postal code: 24060

For two centuries Villongo was two towns. In 1724, under Venetian rule, the comune split along the line of its two ancient parishes, becoming Villongo San Filastro and Villongo Sant'Alessandro; Napoleon's government tried to reunite them, the Austrian restoration undid that, and the merger was finally imposed from above in 1927. The same year the hamlets of Castione, Fosio, Rocco and Rudello passed to Sarnico.

Before the split the area had been a Roman vicus in the pagus of Calepio, and the name is thought to recall a Lombard settlement: a villa, a small inhabited nucleus, with the ending -ongo. The counts of Calepio held sway for centuries, and under Venice the village belonged to the County of Calepio. The arms show a red tower topped by three stars, one for Villongo and one for each of its two quarters; the chapel of San Rocco, on the parish churchyard, holds works by Romanino.
