Mornico al Serio

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,890 · Postal code: 24050

In Ermanno Olmi's film The Tree of Wooden Clogs, Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1978, the Treviglio of the late nineteenth century is not Treviglio: it is Mornico al Serio, together with neighbouring Martinengo, Palosco and Cividate al Piano. The farmsteads and yards seen on screen are here, and they were chosen because they had stayed as the countryside the film had to tell about. Since 1981, every year, the village holds its festival on the threshing floor.

The parish church of Sant'Andrea, built in the twentieth century, was consecrated by Angelo Roncalli, that is by the future Pope John XXIII; beside it stands the old parish church of the Beata Vergine Addolorata, of the eleventh century, with its Romanesque presbytery and the frescoes of Maffiolo da Cazzano. Out in the fields, where there was once a cemetery, stands the church of San Rocco, octagonal in plan: inside is a painting signed and dated by Bartolomeo Cabrini in 1495, discovered only in the last century. Two thousand eight hundred and ninety inhabitants in the province of Bergamo.
