Pontoglio

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,894 · Postal code: 25037

Pontoglio is the westernmost comune of the Brescia area, on the left bank of the Oglio that named it: tenth-century documents call it Ponte Oleo, bridge over the Oglio. The arms repeat it — a sky field, a two-arched bridge with a central turret over water — and come from those of the Pontoglio family, lords of village and castle from the twelfth century.

Brescians and Bergamasques fought for the river: on 6 and 7 July 1191 the Malamorte battle drove the retreating Bergamasques onto a wooden bridge that collapsed, killing hundreds. Six seriole dug between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries still water the fields, and in 1622 a Venetian decree raised the Sarnico-stone bridge, damaged by the French and rebuilt in the nineteenth century.
