Premolo

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,171 · Postal code: 24020

Premolo has no boundary drawn at a desk: its limits are ridges, watersheds and streams, and the territory climbs in one breath from the 510 metres of the shelf above the Serio to the 2512 of Pizzo Arera. The village is a string of hamlets hung on the slope, Ceradello and Oselandina low down, then Costa, Ranica, Case Lulini, Botta and Piane, and Bratte at the top: they were separate settlements, and the building of the last decades of the twentieth century has largely welded them together. To the east runs the Nossana, which a little further down, already in the territory of Ponte Nossa, feeds the aqueduct that supplies one hundred and eighteen thousand people in the province of Bergamo.

The mountain here has always given two things, water and metal. The ground at Belloro was reckoned to hold the best calamine mines in the area, indispensable for making bronze, and the Romans did little more than connect diggings that were already open. But the find that matters dates from 1963: in the Canal de l'Andruna, a cave used for burials in the Bronze Age, the remains of three men, two women and three children came to light, together with worked flints and potsherds. That grave pushed back the date of human presence in the entire province.
