There are four explanations of the name Nossa. The two most widely accepted derive it from trees: from the Latin alnocea, from the alder, or from Nucea, the place of the walnut trees. A third, from the historian Luigi Furia, traces it to a Celtic word for the penalty owed for an offence, because it was precisely at the springs that those peoples administered justice. And then there is the legend told by don Canini, parish priest in the middle of the nineteenth century: the water of the stream was called by the people «acqua nossa», that is, our water.
Today that water belongs to a great many others. The Nossa spring feeds an aqueduct with an estimated flow of between nine hundred and fifteen hundred litres a second, which meets the needs of a hundred and eighteen thousand people in the province of Bergamo: sixty times the population of the village. Earlier still, the same stream had made Ponte Nossa's fortune with its forge hammers, and an artificial channel drove the machines of the first textile mill directly; today that channel feeds a small hydroelectric plant.
