The Seven Holy Brothers, patrons of Ranica

Ranica celebrates the Seven Holy Brothers on 10 July, in the church dedicated to them.
Ranica lies on the right bank of the Serio, where the Val Seriana opens towards Bergamo. Its name probably comes from the Celtic Lar, “chief”: Laran was what belonged to the chief, and from that came the Latin Larianica. Ponteranica, the next village, confirms it, being Post-Laranica, beyond Laranica. For centuries people said La Ranica, and a decree of the young Kingdom of Italy dropped the article, which survives in dialect as La Ranga.
The old coat of arms carried a crowned green serpent of Visconti origin, read locally instead as the salamander known as the ranica: canting arms. After the war the council set it aside, wrongly taking it for a fascist leftover, and replaced it with a golden cogwheel, taken from the mark of the cotton mill Gioachino Zopfi opened in 1870 on the roggia Serio Grande, using its water power. There in 1909 came the Ranica strike, nearly two months to get a dismissed worker reinstated, with bishop Giacomo Maria Radini Tedeschi and the future pope John XXIII behind them.
