The name comes from the Latin Molleus, the damp place, and there is so much water here that the coat of arms shows a fountain; the second part, de' Calvi, was added by royal decree in 1863. The Calvi had arrived in the sixteenth century, when the upper Val Brembana passed to Venice and Moio was placed in the district Oltre la Goggia, with its capital at Valnegra and with tax relief and privileges: the family made itself a hunting reserve here and built in the Venetian manner. The village can still be read from its façades, with farmhouses next to town houses.
Before them came the Visconti, Ghibellines, and the source recalls a licence they granted to members of their faction: to kill a Guelph. Yet not one document survives of fighting actually done at Moio. In 1927 the municipality was abolished and put together with Valnegra, Piazza Brembana and Lenna into a single one called San Martino de' Calvi: it stood alone again only in 1956, almost thirty years later. In 1947, meanwhile, the artificial lake of Bernigolo had been made on the Brembo, carrying water to the power station at Lenna.
