Sant'Omobono Terme

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,893 · Postal code: 24038

The old municipal arms were a three-part pun: a mace, a saddle among mountains and an uprooted stump — that is, Mazzoleni, Selino and Cepino, the three villages that in 1927 had been put together to form the commune. When Valsecca joined in 2014, the pun no longer worked: the new arms, approved in 2015, carry four towers separated by a Saint Andrew's cross, one for each village, and the blue field stands for the thermal waters. The motto reads Consociati pro Valdimania, united for the Valle Imagna.

Three thousand eight hundred and ninety-three inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, and it is the most populous municipality in the whole valley. The name comes from the patron saint of Mazzoleni; until 2004 it was called Sant'Omobono Imagna, then a regional law replaced the valley's name with that of the spa. The sulphurous waters, already praised at the end of the eighteenth century in the writings of Giovanni Maironi da Ponte, were classed in the mid-nineteenth among the best in Italy, and everything else grew up around them. The merger with Valsecca was approved by more than eighty per cent of those who voted.
