Corna Imagna

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 953 · Postal code: 24030

Corna Imagna has 953 inhabitants on the left side of the Imagna valley, and its name states the rock: corna, in Bergamasque, is the stone on which the village is built. The first document is from 1202, an act by which bishop Lanfranco of Bergamo had the properties of the bishopric marked out: it reads of going «ad cornam que est super cornam», and it also carries the name of the first inhabitant of whom anything is known.

The village grew in the Middle Ages for a not very heroic reason: those fleeing the wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines looked for out-of-the-way places, and this was one. The inhabitants kept out of the disputes, and the quiet that followed was such that under Venice Corna Imagna became the seat of the jurisdiction for the whole valley. On the coat of arms, granted in 1983, beside the hill and the stream there is an open book: it stands there, the official document says, for the age-old tradition of the villagers of giving their children a solid and cultivated education.
