Selvino

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,991 · Postal code: 24020

At the end of the Second World War about eight hundred Jewish children who had survived the extermination camps arrived at Selvino. They were taken in by Sciesopoli, a former fascist children's colony named after Amatore Sciesa, while they waited to leave for the state of Israel that was then coming into being. They are known all over the world as the children of Selvino, and their story was first told by Aharon Megged; in 1996, fifty years later, the village twinned with the kibbutz of Tzeelim, founded by a group of those children.

For the rest, Selvino is a wooded plateau on the watershed between the val Seriana and the val Brembana. The name comes from silva, and the first document that mentions it is from 955: it names a certain Arimondo of Selvino, and disproves the legend of a founder called Salvino. There were so many beeches that their nut, the fasa, was for centuries one of the staple foods. On the coat of arms there is a horse: it recalls the custom, which lasted until 1796, of sending the horses of the Bergamo curia up here to graze.
