Stezzano

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 12,623 · Postal code: 24040

The name first appears in 805, in a document listing inhabitants of the village of Stegiano. The villagers built their own defence: the fortified building raised in 1084 by a crossing of trade roads, with a moat and a watchtower, belonged to most of the townspeople, each holding a small share.

The sanctuary of the Madonna dei Campi began as a shrine put up by farmers and was enlarged after an apparition said to have occurred in 1586 to two shepherd girls: the Virgin appeared dressed in black, holding a breviary, hence the name Our Lady of Prayer. Beside the parish church stands the monument locals call Ol Surbù, run up in sandstone for the passage of Ferdinand I of Austria and later used by the women as a washing place.
