Feast of Saints Hippolytus and Cassian
📅 Every year, on 13 August
On 13 August Agnosine, a municipality of 1,833 inhabitants in the province of Brescia, celebrates its patrons Saints Hippolytus and Cassian (santi Ippolito e Cassiano).
On the arms of Agnosine there is a lamb, and it is almost certainly canting: agnus, in Latin, is precisely the lamb, and the commonest explanation of the village's name says that herds and flocks grazed here. It is not the only one, though: some derive Agnosine from the dialect Gnusen and some from the Lombard agno, which means alder. The arms, incidentally, have never been granted by any official decree.
In 1388 the village entered the dominions of the Visconti and then the Quadra of the Valle Sabbia; in 1440 doge Foscari granted Agnosine, Odolo, Preseglie and Bione in fief to Galvano da Nozza, who had fought for Venice «showing valour amid military labours» and had lost his son Aldreghino in battle. The place people here are fondest of, though, is a spring: the Fontanino, which here and in the neighbouring villages was considered a treasure. From there a path climbs through a beech wood to the Santella Mora, where people went to ask for graces.
